Her performance won her the Filmfare Award for Best Actress – Telugu.[10][11] She made her debut in Tamil cinema with A. L. Vijay's bilingual horror drama Diya (2018).[12]

Early life and education
Sai Pallavi Senthamarai was born on 9 May 1992[14] into a Badaga family[15] in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu[16]. Her ancestral hometown is Kotagiri in the Nilgiris district. She was born to Kannan, a Central Excise officer and former football player, and Radha Kannan, a dancer.
Growing up in a household that emphasized both physical athletics and artistic expression, Pallavi developed a passion for sports from an early age and is an avid badminton player. Her younger sister, Pooja Kannan, also entered the film industry as an actress.
Pallavi was raised in Coimbatore and completed her primary and secondary education at Avila Convent School.[17][18][19] Following the completion of her schooling, she chose to pursue higher studies in medicine abroad and enrolled at the Tbilisi State Medical University in Georgia. She completed her medical training and graduated with a Medical Degree (MD) in 2016, a degree recognized by the Medical Council of India.[20][21]
On 31 August 2020, Pallavi took and successfully passed the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE) held in Trichy to validate her foreign medical qualifications in India.[22][23] Despite completing her medical education, she chose not to register as a practicing medical physician, electing instead to pursue a full-time career in acting and cinema.[24]
In addition to her native Badaga and Tamil[25][26], Pallavi is multilingual and speaks Kannada, English, Malayalam, Telugu, Hindi, and Georgian.[27]
Career
Early work and film breakthrough (2005–2017)
Pallavi's initial foray into the film industry began with uncredited roles as a background dancer and junior artist. She made her first on-screen appearance as a child artist in the Tamil film Kasthuri Maan (2005). She later appeared as a junior artist in Dhaam Dhoom (2008), where she can be seen in the background.[28] Her early dance career included participation in television reality shows. In 2008, she competed in the Tamil dance show Ungalil Yaar Adutha Prabhu Deva on Vijay TV, followed by her participation in Dhee Ultimate Dance Show (D4) in 2009, where she was a finalist.[29][30] During this period, she also appeared in television advertisements and acted in the short film Kaatchi Pizhai.[31][32][33] Pallavi rejected Sekhar Kammula's Happy Days (2007) due to her school education.[34][35]
Malayalam film-director Alphonse Puthren had approached her six years before, through clippings from a reality show which she had participated, showcased in Facebook.[36] Then, she accepted the role of Malar in his film Premam opposite Nivin Pauly.[37] But, he originally wanted to cast Asin for the role of "Malar," but the character was later rewritten to be a Tamilian.[38][39] The film went on to become an unprecedented cultural phenomenon and her performance received acclaim from critics and audience alike. She went on to win several "Best Female Debut" awards that year, including the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut.[40][41] In 2016, Pallavi acted opposite Dulquer Salman in Kali.[42] The high-intensity thriller demanded a sharp contrast from her previous comforting role. For her role she received a nomination for Filmfare Award for Best Actress – Malayalam.[43]
The year 2017 marked her debut in Telugu cinema with Sekhar Kammula's romantic drama Fidaa, in the role of Bhanumathi, a feisty village girl from Telangana.[44][45][46] She dubbed for her role in Telugu and her performance in the film was highly acclaimed and was regarded as one of the "100 Greatest Performances of the Decade" by Film Companion. She went on to win her first Filmfare Award for Best Actress – Telugu for her role.[47][48] Later that year, she starred in the action comedy film Middle Class Abbayi alongside Nani, which emerged as a major critical and commercial success.[49]
Career fluctuations (2018-2020)
Her next project came in 2018, when director A. L. Vijay announced that he would direct her in a script he had written "three and a half years ago" for Lyca Productions.[50][51] This project, released as Diya, marked her official Tamil debut after she had previously stepped away from, been replaced in, or experienced the cancellation of several high-profile projects. Diya, a Tamil–Telugu bilingual, ultimately had an average run at the box office.[52] Later that year, she starred in the action-comedy Maari 2, a sequel to Maari (2015), opposite Dhanush under the direction of Balaji Mohan.[53] A song from the movie, "Rowdy Baby", choreographed by Prabhu Deva and assisted by Jani Master, became a massive viral sensation.[54][55][56][57][58] Released on YouTube on 12 January 2019, the music video set historical milestones, becoming the first South Indian song to exceed 1.5 billion views.[59][60][61] Her last release that year was Padi Padi Leche Manasu opposite Sharwanand, which ultimately failed to perform at the box office.[62][63][64] Following its commercial failure, Pallavi made headlines when she refused to accept the remaining portion of her agreed remuneration as a gesture of goodwill and solidarity with the producers.[65] This ethical approach earned her widespread praise within the industry.
In 2019, she played Nithya Lakshmi, a non-verbal autistic character, in the psychological thriller Athiran opposite Fahadh Faasil. Despite limited dialogue, she delivered a nuanced performance. To authentically mirror the character's unique motor movements and cognitive responses, she engaged in pre-production research and spent time interacting with specialized trainers.[66] Her next release was the Tamil political drama NGK, opposite Suriya and directed by Selvaraghavan.[67] She portrayed Geetha Kumari. Although the film received mixed reviews from critics, it concluded its run as a commercial success.[68] In the same year, she also acted in a Netflix anthology film series Paava Kadhaigal segment Oor Iravu directed by Vetrimaaran.[69] She portrayed Sumathi, a character caught in a complex situation. The narrative explores the clash between love, societal pressures, and notions of honor, with Sumathi's character at the center of this conflict, earning a nomination for SIIMA Award for Best Actress – Tamil.
Critical recognition and commercial success (2021-present)
Speaking on her script selection, Pallavi said she preferred focusing her "creative energy on scripts where the female protagonist has significant agency and dramatic narrative weight rather than appearing in conventional decorative roles".[70][71] Pallavi started 2021 by starring in the romantic drama Love Story directed by Sekhar Kammula,[72] alongside Naga Chaitanya for the first time and in her second collaboration with Kammula after Fidaa.[73] The film was a critical and commercial success. Her next film was periodic-based Shyam Singa Roy, opposite Nani in their second collaboration after MCA where she portrayed Maithreyi, a captivating devadasi in 1970s Kolkata.[74] A song from the movie "Pranavalaya" received praise and showcases her dance skills.[75] Her performances in both Love Story and Shyam Singha Roy earned her the Critics Award and the Best Actress award at the Filmfare Awards South.[76]
In 2022 she appeared in Telugu film Virata Parvam opposite Rana Daggubati. Set against the backdrop of the Naxalite movement in 1990s Telangana where she portrayed Vennela.[77][78] The film was released theatrically, though it received positive reviews the movie and underperformed at the box-office. A critic for Pinkvilla stated, "Sai Pallavi's glorious performance is the only thing that keeps the love story from seeming farcical and flimsy".[79] Director Gautham Ramachandran announced his new female-oriented film, who earlier directed Richie (2017). Pallavi was chosen to play a lead after Jyothika denied.[80] The film was announced on 9 May 2022 with the makers releasing a special glimpse of the film.[81] For her Tamil film Gargi,[82][83] she dubbed her own lines in both Telugu and Kannada. The film was produced by actress Aishwarya Lekshmi.[84] Her performance received widespread acclaim and portrayed the character with depth and conviction, earning praise for her emotive acting and natural screen presence.[85][86][87] Her portrayal added a significant dimension to the film's narrative, making her a standout in the cast.[88][89][90] Her performances in both Virata Parvam and Gargi earned her the Critics Award and the Best Actress – Tamil award at the Filmfare Awards South.
Her only release in the year 2024 was Tamil film Amaran along with Sivakarthikeyan produced by Kamal Hassan under Raaj Kamal Films International directed by Rajkumar Periyasamy. she played Indhu Rebecca Varghese, wife of Major Mukund Varadarajan.[91][92] Her acting in the film has been widely praised for its authenticity and ability to convey a range of complex emotions. But some critics have pointed out that Pallavi's Malayalam accent in the film was not entirely authentic, and that her character, while emotionally impactful, felt somewhat underutilized in the film. The film became a sleeper hit at the box office, emerged as the second highest-grossing Tamil film of 2024. For her performance, she earned her 7th filmfare award for Best Actress.
In 2025, she played the female lead opposite Naga Chaitanya in Thandel, making it their second film collaboration after Love Story. Based on a real-life incident that occurred in 2018, it depicted how Pakistani forces captured a fisherman from Srikakulam in international waters.[93][94][95] The film emerged a commercial success. Her portrayal of Satya was well received. Avad Mohammad of OTTPlay noted, "Thandel is elevated by outstanding performances from Pallavi and Chaitanya. Pallavi's command over the colloquial rural diction added a high degree of emotional realism, enhancing the overall cinematic experience." Following her work in South Indian cinema, Pallavi made her Hindi film debut with Ek Din, a love story set against the scenic beauty of Sapporo, starring opposite Junaid Khan, son of Aamir Khan.[96] The film met with mixed-to negative reviews and failed commercially.[97]
Pallavi will next portray Goddess Sita opposite Ranbir Kapoor in the Hindi two-part adaptation of Ramayana directed by Nitesh Tiwari.[98] She will then appear in two Tamil films: Om opposite Dhanush[99] and Mani Ratnam's film opposite Vijay Sethupathi.[100]
Media image and artistry
Pallavi is recognized as one of the highest-paid actresses in South Indian cinema.[101] Film critics and media outlets frequently highlight her natural screen persona and high-energy dancing abilities. Film journalist Subha J. Rao noted that she brings "freshness" to the screen, adding, "Sai Pallavi comes across as someone unafraid to flaunt her unconventional looks, offbeat film choices and lack of pretence."[102] Rediff.com placed her second in its "Top 5 Malayalam Actresses" list of 2016, with Vijay George stating that she "stole everyone's hearts" through her debut performance as Malar in Premam.[103]
In 2020, Pallavi was the only actress featured in Forbes India's annual "30 Under 30" list.[104] She was ranked 20th in its list of the most influential stars on Instagram in South Indian cinema for the year 2021.[105] In 2021, she became one of the most tweeted-about South Indian actress.[106] In 2022, Forbes India included her in its inaugural "Showstoppers – India's Top 50 Outperformers" list, honoring individuals across cinema, sports, and business.[107] She made her debut as a choreographer with the musical number "Rockaankuthu" in Premam (2015).[108] Beyond her choreography work, her performances in dance numbers such as "Vachinde" from Fidaa (2017),[109] "Rowdy Baby" from Maari 2 (2018), "Saranga Dariya" from Love Story (2021),[110] and "Pranavalaya" from Shyam Singha Roy (2021), gained widespread digital popularity, expanding her pan-Indian recognition.
[111]
Her critically acclaimed performances span multiple languages and include roles in Premam (2015), Kali (2016), Fidaa (2017), Love Story (2021), Shyam Singha Roy (2021), Virata Parvam (2022), Gargi (2022), Amaran (2024) and Thandel (2025).[112][113] She has consistently spoken against unrealistic beauty standards, emphasizing that individuals "need to be confident about who [they] are and [their] skin colour," while actively advocating for self-acceptance, natural beauty, and body positivity across her public appearances and social media platforms.[114][115]
Philanthropy
Pallavi's public involvement in humanitarian initiatives began early in her career. In September 2015, she participated in a public walkathon held in Kochi to raise awareness and financial assistance for cancer patients.[116]
Her broader philanthropic work includes active participation in COVID-19 relief efforts across South India. During the pandemic, she leveraged her social media influence to encourage fanbase-driven charitable contributions rather than birthday celebrations, leading to direct food and essential relief distribution to vulnerable communities and healthcare workers.[117] Additionally, Pallavi regularly supports grassroots social initiatives, eco-friendly living campaigns, and civic causes promoting education and healthcare access for underprivileged children.
Controversies
Pallavi has been involved in several controversies.
- Working relationship allegations (2018)
During the promotional phase for the 2018 bilingual film Kanam (titled Diya in Tamil), actor Naga Shourya publicly alleged in an interview that Pallavi displayed short-tempered behavior and threw tantrums on set. Pallavi later addressed the remarks during a promotional event, expressing surprise and clarifying that she always respected her co-stars and maintained a professional demeanor on set, which led to the issue quietly subsiding.[118][119]
- Rejection of fairness cream endorsement (2019)
In 2019, Pallavi attracted public attention after rejecting a commercial advertisement deal worth ₹2 crore (equivalent to ₹2.6 crore or US$310,000 in 2023) for a fairness cream brand. Explaining her decision in subsequent interviews, she stated that she preferred to maintain her natural appearance without heavy makeup and refused to endorse products that could create self-image insecurities regarding skin tone, particularly among young women. Her decision was praised across Indian media as a stand against colorism.[120]
- Remarks on Kashmir conflict and religious violence (2022)
In June 2022, during a promotional interview with GreatAndhra for her film Virata Parvam, Pallavi commented on the subjective nature of religious violence. She stated that while the film The Kashmir Files (2022) depicted the tragic violence faced by Kashmiri Pandits during the 1990 exodus, it was philosophically comparable to recent incidents of cow vigilantism, citing an instance where a Muslim truck driver was assaulted and forced to chant "Jai Shri Ram."[121][122] The snippet went viral on social media, leading to police complaints filed against her in Hyderabad and criticism from political groups who accused her of equating a historic genocide with localized crimes.[123][124] Pallavi subsequently released a video statement on Instagram clarifying that her remarks were taken out of context, reiterating that she would never trivialize human suffering and that her comments were intended as a universal stance against all forms of violence.[125][126]
- Resurfaced comments on the Indian Army (2024)
In October 2024, during promotions for the military biographical film Amaran, an edited video excerpt from her 2022 interview resurfaced online. In the clip, Pallavi remarked: "People in Pakistan think our army is a terrorist group. But for us, it is them. So, the perspective changes. I don't understand violence."[127] The circulating clip generated online backlash, with social media campaigns calling for a boycott of Amaran and claiming the statement disrespected the armed forces. Media outlets and commentators defended Pallavi, noting that the clip was selectively edited and formed part of a broader pacifist narrative against armed conflict.[128] The film ultimately opened to high box-office returns without commercial disruption.[128]
- AI-generated deepfake images (2025)
In September 2025, private photographs from Pallavi's vacation in Australia with her sister, Pooja Kannan, were digitally manipulated using generative AI tools.[129] The altered deepfake images falsely depicted the actress in revealing attire, leading to target trolling online questioning her casting as Sita in Nitesh Tiwari's upcoming mythological adaptation Ramayana.[129][130] On 26 September 2025, Pallavi addressed the fabricated imagery directly by publishing the original video footage from her trip on social media, clarifying that the altered images were fake and reiterating her boundary between personal life and professional work.[129] The incident sparked broader media discourse on AI abuse and celebrity privacy protection in India.[129]
